Description
'Player ID : Red Peter’s Confession' is a solo performance that transplants Franz Kafka’s short story 'A Report to an Academy' (1917) into the universe of the online game Battlegrounds. Marking the 20th anniversary of his theatre company, director Kim Hyuntak steps onto the stage himself for the first time.
The performance unfolds as an intimate self-confession that looks back on a life lived in theatre, while questioning the path ahead and the responsibilities that must be borne. At the same time, it offers a sharp diagnosis of our contemporary condition.
Red Peter stands before the Academy and declares that he ended his life as “Red Peter” five years ago and has since become human. Yet as his confession continues, what gradually emerges is the unstable outline of a being suspended somewhere between the virtual and the real, between the one who controls and the one who is controlled.
Known for skillfully translating video, music, and dance into theatrical language, Kim Hyuntak intertwines three layers of physical expression on stage: character, half-human, and human. Through his body, the paradox of modern individuals—who believe themselves to be free while bound by invisible forces and algorithms—condenses into a visceral experience.
Peter’s journey, in which he erases parts of himself in order to survive a game where only the winner earns a place at the dinner table, strangely overlaps with our own lives. Are our choices truly our own? Who is playing whom? And what does freedom really mean in the digital age?
